Councillor: Contractors harassed by gangsters

Published: Fri, 03 Aug 2012

SELAYANG: Gangsters have been reportedly disrupting the road maintenance and hillslope repair works carried out by contractors in different parts of the municipality, the Selayang Municipal Council heard at its full-board meeting on Tuesday.

The matter was brought up by councillor Nanto Gopalan Krishnan Rajoo who told the council he had received a call from a contractor carrying out road works at Taman Sri Batu Caves at midnight a few days ago.

Five to six  gang members had disrupted the contractor’s work and took away the workers’ tools.

Nanto Gopalan had rushed to the scene immediately but the men were unperturbed and even argued with him when he threatened to call the police.

Councillor Lim Ching How said he had also faced similar problems in his zone.

MPS president Datuk Zainal Abidin Aala said four cases - two in Rawang, one each in Batu Cave and Kampung Laksamana - were reported to the council in the past two months where contractors’ equipment had been seized but no physical attacks have been reported so far.

Zainal said the contractors had completed their  projects.

The council thinks the gangsters are not targeting any specific contractor but are after protection money. “We’re going to ask the police to look into it,” said Zainal.
