Published: Fri, 10 Aug 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: Two winners of the Yamaha Electone Festival held recently will be representing Malaysia in the Asia-Pacific Electone Festival (APEF) 2012 in Indonesia.

Roger Tang Chun Yean came out tops in the Concours Category - Open Age Section, while Liew Mei Xin won the Concours Category - Junior Section (Teen).

By clinching the Grand Prix Award in each section, they have a chance to make their country proud during the APEF 2012 on Sept 9.

Tang came up tops with his performance of the song “Who Cares”, while Liew performed “Daphnis Et Chloe-Danse Generale.”

The Yamaha Electone Festival was organised by Yamaha Music (M) Sdn Bhd and was held at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) auditorium.

Yamaha had been organising the competition jointly with Yamaha Music Schools across the country since April and May. The preliminary rounds were held in Penang, Johor, Sandakan and the Klang Valley.

The Grand Prix winners came from the Councours category while the Festival category saw four performers win the Most Outstanding Award in each section.

Kelvin Lau and Wai Pei Len won the award in the Solo Section – Junior and Solo Section – Senior respectively.

For the Ensemble Section – Junior and Ensemble Section – Senior, the winners were musical group Whiz Kids and Fantasfjorir respectively. The winners were selected by a jury that included music personalities and educationists.

The origin of the Electone Festival dates back to 1964 in Japan and highlights the versatile keyboard instrument with its wide range of tones.
